The Tuning of the World

The Tuning of the World

Deep ListeningExperimentalAmbient
Tokyo-based DJ Yamato Akitake, who explores a Deep Listening approach to sound, presents a one-hour mix built on the concept of “capturing the sounds that exist within an environment.“

The title, “The Tuning of the World,” is borrowed from the classic work of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, who introduced the concept of Soundscapes.

While environmental and ambient music has recently gained renewed attention through a global resurgence, this movement—historically significant—often prioritizes recorded works. As a result, the fundamental practice of actively listening to the sounds that exist in space—as advocated by early pioneers—has yet to fully permeate.

The very format of a DJ mix might seem at odds with the essence of environmental music. However, this work is deliberately designed to shift the listener’s focus toward “the sounds that exist within an environment,” extending beyond merely pleasant or soothing music.

May this mix prompt a deeper reflection on the act of “listening” itself.
